چکیده

We describe experimental and theoretical results that demonstrate the feasibility of power generation using concentration cells based on ionic concentration gradients and reverse electrodialysis. A peak power density of 0.2 (0.7) lW cm 2 and a maximum energy density of 0.4 (0.4) mJ cm 3 delivered in 3 h to a 2 (5) kX resistor were recorded using a microfiltration (anion exchange) membrane, respectively. A comprehensive model is developed to predict the evolution of the output voltage with time in relation to the solute concentration in each cell and derive the power density and efficiency limits. Electric Power Generation with Reverse Electrodialysis

The computer simulation program of a practical scale reverse electrodialysis process has been developed based on the program for saline water electrodialysis. The program is applied to compute the performance of an industrial-scale reverse electrodialysis stack (effective membrane area S = 1 m × 1 m = 1 m2, cell pair number N = 300 pairs). The stack operatingconditions are optimized. Seaw...

Reverse Electrodialysis for Salinity Gradient Power Generation: Challenges and Future Perspectives

Salinity gradient energy, which is also known as Blue energy, is a renewable energy form that can be extracted from the mixing of two solutions with different salinities. About 80% of the current global electricity demand could potentially be covered by this energy source. Among several energy extraction technologie...

Enhanced Salt Removal by Unipolar Ion Conduction in Ion Concentration Polarization Desalination

Chloride ion, the majority salt in nature, is ∼52% faster than sodium ion (DNa+ = 1.33, DCl- = 2.03[10(-9)m(2)s(-1)]). Yet, current electrochemical desalination technologies (e.g. electrodialysis) rely on bipolar ion conduction, removing one pair of the cation and the anion simultaneously. Here, we demonstrate that novel ion concentration polarization desalination can enhance salt removal under...

Modification of Polymeric Membrane for Energy Generation through Salinity Gradient: A Short Review

Salinity gradient energy (SGE) refers to the energy created from the difference in salt concentration between two streams. There are three types of SGE namely, pressure retarded osmosis (PRO), reverse electrodialysis (RED), and capacitive mixing (CapMix). All these technologies require membrane for the system to be operational. In this short review, the membranes modifications for each principl...

Reducing pumping energy by using different flow rates of high and low concentration solutions in reverse electrodialysis cells

Energy use for pumping affects both net energy recovery and operational costs of reverse electrodialysis (RED) systems. In order to reduce the energy needed for pumping, electrical performance and hydrodynamic power losses in a RED stack were investigated by simultaneously (2–140 mL/min) or independently varying the flow rates of the high concentration (HC, 35 g/L NaCl) and low concentration (L...
